Searching for the best places to visit in the spring that are still in the USA? You read my mind because, omg, me too!

I LOVE springtime trips.

Plus, this time of year is considered off-season for many destinations, meaning you’ll fight fewer crowds and find better deals on hotels and flights.

So, there’s like a million reasons to travel this spring!

Pick any one of them you like and pack your bags.

These are the USA’s best places to visit in the spring:

Chicago, Illinois

Spring in Chicago is a magical time! I love strolling through Millennium Park, where Cloud Gate (the “Bean”) sits. Inside, the park is alive with blooming flowers and street musicians.

Take in the beautiful skyline while sipping coffee and watching the boats go by at the Chicago Riverwalk.

The Art Institute of Chicago is an easy way to spend an entire day. No spring visit to Chicago is complete without indulging in deep-dish pizza (and a food festival, if possible, or at least a culinary tour).

Tip:

Be aware that earlier in spring, the Windy City will also be pretty cold, probably with snow still on the ground.

Road Trip New Mexico

I’ve been a HUGE advocate of road tripping between Albuquerque and Santa Fe.

While in ABQ, don’t skip the beautifully romantic Old Town (my guide is here!), Although you can drive the freeway to save time, I highly recommend traveling along the Turquoise Trail National Scenic Byway.

It’s a relatively short drive, about an hour, yet it packs a punch with inspiring desert landscapes, tiny ghost towns, and other purely New Mexico stops, great for snagging an authentic New Mexico souvenir.

Read my full guide to the Turquoise Trail here.

Santa Fe is the (artful) cherry on top. I love wandering down the famous Canyon Road, surrounded by adobe buildings and delicious local cuisine tempting me at every turn (I give in to the temptation, and so should you).

Cherry Blossoms in Washington, D.C.

Every spring, Washington, D.C., is painted pink thanks to the Cherry Blossom season. Strolling through the Tidal Basin during this season, you’ll be mesmerized. It’s a pink lover’s dream 🙋‍♀️

Consider the National Cherry Blossom Festival, an annual event packed with food, fun, culture, and the jubilant spirit of spring in the U.S. capital.

For the best views, pack a picnic and head to the west side of the Tidal Basin.

Palm Springs, California

Visiting Palm Springs in spring is a 10/10. The weather is perfect for the many outdoor activities that you can’t do in other seasons due to the harsh desert sun.

Plus, the landscapes of the Coachella Valley are stunning.

The desert flowers bloom beautifully, creating a backdrop of earthy colors against the clear blue skies. Please don’t skip Joshua Tree National Park to see those cool-shaped, rare trees. Strolling through Palm Springs’s Uptown Design District, you can tour the town’s famous mid-century modern architecture or shop till you drop.

Hands down, if you love vintage charm, desert drama, and California good vibes, Palm Springs is one of the best places to visit during the summer in the USA.

New Orleans, Louisiana

Spring in New Orleans is an absolute delight (just like any other time of year in NOLA!).

I love how the city comes alive for the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival (the largest free music festival in the South) or the French Quarter Fest

You can also tour the city’s famous cemeteries without passing out from the heat, which is NOT the case in the summer.

Also, being blitzed on Bourbon Street late at night isn’t half as hot in the spring.

Traveling solo?

Check out the Solo Female Traveler’s Guide to New Orleans I created, in collaboration with NOLA Tour Guy.

Austin, Texas

As a native Texan, I’ve visited Austin in the spring many times and have never failed to be blown away by the wildflowers. The iconic Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is a must-see for anyone who loves Texas flowers, and taking a cultural tour of Austin is always a good move.

Barton Springs Pool in Zilker Park is a popular way to spend a lazy afternoon swimming in this natural spring-fed pool. From world-famous Texas barbecue to trendy Austin breweries, this city has plenty of things to put in your mouth.

Music is everywhere all year and you’ll easily find live bands playing all around the city.

San Francisco, California

I can’t express how lovely spring in San Francisco is!

SF bursts to life with its charming Victorian architecture, striking, hilly views of the Pacific Ocean, and lovely hydrangea and dahlia blooming with color each spring. Don’t miss the views and flowers from the world-famous Lombard Street!

San Francisco’s weather in spring is delightful, the perfect time to ride a cable car, eat at one of SF’s famous bakeries, drink Anchor Steam beer at a historic brewery, catch a West Coast sunset, or have a life-changing revelation.

Golden Gate Park is another must-do. The Conservatory of Flowers showcases a vast collection of exotic plants and colorful blooms.

Yes, I’m biased because I love this city at any time of the year, BUT I promise you, San Francisco is one of the best places to visit in the spring in the USA.

Anywhere in Arizona

Every year, Arizona transforms itself with an extraordinary splash of color, making it one of the best places to visit in the spring in the USA.

I love the Mexican gold poppies. Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve is a stunner, with over 30,000 acres of lush desert pretty and ready to be photographed each spring.

I’ve also visited the Grand Canyon during this time of year so that I could do as much hiking as possible (the temps make this impossible at other times in the summer and winter).

Wildflower Chasing in Death Valley

Each spring, wildflowers bloom across the typically barren landscapes of Death Valley. When the conditions are just right, Desert Gold, Notch-Leaf Phacelia, and Desert Five-Spot bloom all at same time!

The contrast between the bright flowers and the desert landscape will make an artist out of you.

An ideal time to catch the flowers is from late February to early April. The weather is mild, perfect for exploring and taking pics. For the best viewing spots, check out Badwater Basin or drive along Jubilee Pass.

Tip:

Check local reports before your visit so you don’t miss the peak bloom period.

The Rocky Mountains in Colorado

Spring in the Rockies is an incredible sight! As the snow melts, wildflowers bloom takeover the trails in Rocky Mountain National Park. Trails like Bear Lake and Emerald Lake offer breathtaking views, and you might spot elk, deer, and maybe a black bear!

The charming town of Estes Park serves as the perfect gateway for a spring adventure. Expect mountain town prices.

The hotel that inspired Stephen King’s The Shining is also located in Estes Park. Note that you’ll now have to pay to park at The Stanley, even if you’re just stopping by for pics.

You might also consider a Northern Colorado road trip to see more small mountain towns!

Spring Skiing in Utah

Anyone who skies dreams of springtime in Utah!

The weather turns milder, but the snow remains fantastic. It’s the best of both worlds: soft snow and warm sunshine. Park City Mountain is known for its seemingly endless trails, while Snowbird has more challenging slopes.

Utah’s ski season extends into April, and some resorts even stay open into mid-May.

New York City

New York City in the spring is on another level.

The whole city just comes off chic and fresh. Central Park is everything with all the flowers blooming, perfect for a stroll or a cute little picnic moment.

And the Brooklyn Botanical Garden? Obsessed. Cherry blossoms everywhere, a true pastel wonderland.

It’s such a “stop and smell the flowers” kind of vibe—literally. Add in rooftop brunches, always enigmatic Times Square shopping in SoHo, and those breezy spring days, and yeah- NYC is one of the best USA places to visit in the spring.

Maui, Hawaii

Maui has long been called one of the best places to visit in the spring in the USA and for like, 100 good reasons.

First off, Maui has stunning beaches and lush waterfalls, including the black sand beach Kaanapali Beach. The winding Hana Highway will expose you to several waterfalls and some of the best views on the island. Each waterfall has its own charm and invites a sense of wonder.

If you love snorkeling, don’t miss Molokini Crater, an actual crater. When I visited here with my mom, this was the first place we snorkeled, and it was otherworldly.

Wildflowers in the Texas Hill Country

Every spring, I find myself drawn to the breathtaking landscapes of Texas Hill Country and its bluebonnets.

One of my favorite spots to experience this floral wonder is along the Willow City Loop. As I drive through its winding roads, I am proud to be a Texan, a rare feeling these days.

For a more hands-on experience, stop by Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, which has events and guided tours.

Don’t skip Burnet—the “Bluebonnet Capital of Texas” for the annual Bluebonnet Festival.

See Manatees in Florida

During cooler months, the warmth of the springs attracts manatees.

Where to See Manatees

  • Crystal River Refuge: is the most common and safe place to see them, and even better, there are guided tours.
  • Weeki Wachee Springs: Perfect for kayaking and spotting manatees.
  • Ichetucknee Springs State Park: Go here for tubing and scenic underwater views.
  • Rainbow Springs: Has lush greenery, gardens, and waterfalls.

Please Note:

Always respect wildlife. Keep a safe distance from manatees and other animals. Touching or feeding them is prohibited.

The Gulf Coast

I love taking a road trip along the Gulf Coast in spring!

Pensacola, Florida, is my top pick and also a great place to book a beach hotel. The white sand beaches are a lot different than Miami and other popular parts of the state. Don’t skip a fancy meal in historic downtown or any of Pensacola’s best beaches

West of Pensacola is Biloxi, Mississippi, which is a way different scene. Walk around the majestic Biloxi Lighthouse, or try your luck at one of the casinos.

Also a Gulf Coast spring gem, Mobile, Alabama. The city’s downtown area is bursting with energy. I spend some time admiring the historic homes and vibrant art scene. Mobile Bay is also beautiful.

Napa Valley, California

I absolutely adore Napa Valley in the spring! The sun starts to warm up, creating the perfect weather for a wine-tasting adventure. It’s one of the best places to visit in the spring in the USA if you’re trying to cross off a bucket list location with drastically fewer crowds than usual.

Top Napa Valley Wineries to Tour:

  • Castello di Amorosa: This winery looks just like an Italian castle!
  • Domaine Carneros: Specializes in sparkling wines.
  • Robert Mondavi Winery: A classic choice with stunning architecture.

Don’t forget to take a scenic (and sober) drive through the vineyards painted yellow with mustard flowers. It’s such a charming sight! For outdoor lovers, hiking trails like the Napa River Trail is a peach (or grape).

The best, safest, most legal way to tour Napa Valley wineries is to take a tour.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Springtime in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is like stepping into a painting. As you wander through the trails, look for trilliums, bloodroot, and Dutchmen’s Breeches. With so much color and life, the Great Smoky Mountains are one of the best places to visit in the spring in the USA.

The park hosts the annual Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage, which is as amazing as it sounds. Workshops, guided walks, and photography classes are all available.

Southern California Coast

Nothing lights my fire more than Southern California’s coast during the spring. The shorelines here offer stunning beauty and warmth, perfect for soul searching.

Spring is a magical time to explore California, as the combination of blooming wildflowers, milder weather, and smaller crowds is the stuff core memories are made of.

The Central Coast, particularly Big Sur, comes alive with floral blankets on the rugged cliffs, making it perfect for scenic hikes along trails like McWay Falls and Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park

Nearby, the charming seaside town of Carmel has awesome art galleries, boutique shopping, and coastal views that feel like they’re straight out of a vintage ad for California.

Alaska

The long, dark winter gives way to longer daylight hours, and the landscape bursts with fresh life. Southeast Alaska, including Juneau and Sitka, is particularly pic-worthy during this time.

Further north, Denali National Park & Preserve is a springtime treasure as the snow starts to melt, revealing alpine meadows; the animals are also most active (think whales, moose, caribou, and bears).

In Anchorage, bird species are migrating northward, so birdwatching is literally bucket list worthy in the spring. Wander through markets in Juneau and try seasonal delicacies.

Yosemite National Park

Springtime at Yosemite National Park is legendary! Many come to be captivated by the majesty of waterfalls that power up as snow melts. The iconic Yosemite Falls, with its thunderous cascade, is a must-see. Vernal Fall and Bridalveil Fall also create striking vistas.

Beyond waterfalls, there are panoramic views, deep valleys, and ancient giant sequoias to lose your mind over.

If you’re looking for the best USA places to visit in the spring, Yosemite should be at the top of your list!

Historic Garden Week in Virginia

Virginia’s Historic Garden Week is the nation’s oldest and largest statewide house and garden tour!

During event week, presented by the Garden Club of Virginia, many historic landmarks, including plantations, private residences, and public spaces, open their doors for exclusive tours.

This ain’t no regular garden party ok, and the variety of landscaping you’ll see will amaze you.

One of the magical elements of this event is the chance to chat with passionate gardeners. Many garden owners are excited to share their knowledge, tips, and the stories behind their gardens.

Miami, Florida

Miami in the spring? That’s hot, but it’s less hot than normal, which is why Miami is one of the best places in the USA to visit in the spring.

Other fun Miami neighborhoods include the colorful Wynwood Design District and the fun and authentic Little Havana.

The spring events are next-level, like the Miami Open and all the fabulous parties during Music Week.

Plus, the food? Obsessed. Fresh ceviche, perfect mojitos, and all the rooftop spots where you can sip and see the sunset. If you’re looking to spend a weekend in Miami, it can be either a party-centered or a oriented weekend as you’d prefer.

Tip: Miami is totally possible on a budget.

The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival in Washington

Look, I love Seattle, but Washington is so much more than that!

I absolutely love visiting the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival in Mount Vernon during spring! The colors of the tulip fields are breathtaking. It’s a photographer’s dream.

Also, make sure to explore the local events and attractions associated with the festival. Whether you’re a flower lover like me or just love scenic beauty, the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival delivers.

Route 66 Road Trip

Route 66? Literally iconic.

It’s giving vintage road trip dreams with a side of Americana glam. From neon-lit diners to retro motels that are so aesthetic, the stops along the way are ✨

Vibes include convertible top down, music blasting, and wind in your hair.

I’ve ‘tripped Route 66 more times than I can recall, especially the Texas/New Mexico/Oklahoma section. The Blue Swallow Motel in Tucumcari is great for a photo opportunity or an overnight stay.

Must-stops:

  • Santa Monica Pier (California): The ultimate photo op. Ocean vibes, Ferris wheels, and all the pier.
  • The Wigwam Motel (Arizona): Stay in a teepee, but make it glam. Retro and totally Insta-worthy.
  • Cadillac Ranch (Texas): Spray paint on vintage Cadillacs? So artsy, so extra.
  • Blue Whale of Catoosa (Oklahoma): A giant blue whale chilling by the water? Adorable.
  • The Midpoint Café (Texas): Halfway through the journey, so obviously you need pie.
  • Meramec Caverns (Missouri): Underground caves, but make them fabulous. Perfect for cool pics.
  • The Cozy Dog Drive-In (Illinois): Hot dogs on a stick? Yes.
  • The Chain of Rocks Bridge (Illinois/Missouri): A walk with major views.
  • The Neon Sign Park (Arizona): All the neon lights!

Whether you’re a history fan or just love a good road trip, Route 66 is about as Americana as it gets.
