If you’ve ever planned a trip to the French Quarter, you’ve probably heard people rave about Brennan’s in New Orleans. 

This iconic pink building on Royal Street has been serving AMAZING Creole cuisine for decades, and yes, it’s every bit as delicious as it looks. 

In this post, I’m breaking down everything you need to know about Brennan’s in New Orleans, from its legendary dishes to what to wear.

Spoiler alert: Brennan’s totally lived up to my expectations.

What is the History of Brennan’s Restaurant?

Brennan’s in New Orleans has one of the most interesting histories of any restaurant in the city (which is saying a lot). 

It opened in 1946 when Owen Brennan created a restaurant that captured the spirit of New Orleans dining: lively, indulgent, and unapologetically authentic. 

The restaurant moved to its current home on Royal Street in 1956, a cute pink building that’s now one of the most recognizable landmarks in the French Quarter.

Over the decades, Brennan’s became known for its long brunches, elaborate service, and Bananas Foster, which helped put it on the map. 

After a brief closure and renovation in the early 2010s, it reopened in 2014, keeping its well-loved menu but updating the interiors.

Today, Brennan’s remains one of the crown jewels of fine dining in New Orleans.


What is Brennan’s New Orleans Known For?

Brennan’s in New Orleans is best known for inventing Bananas Foster, a world-famous dessert created right in their kitchen in 1951. 

It’s dramatic, sweet, dreamy, life-changing, amazing, omg.

Back in the day (1951), New Orleans was a major hub for banana imports due to its proximity to the Caribbean and Central America.

So, Ella Brennan asked his chef to make something special using bananas.

The result was a masterpiece of caramelized bananas, brown sugar, butter, cinnamon, and dark rum, flambéed and poured over vanilla ice cream. 

When you order it, your server will wheel over a portable stove to your table and flambé it right there.

Other famous dishes at Brennan’s include Eggs Hussarde, a twist on eggs Benedict with ham, hollandaise, and a rich red wine sauce, and Steak Diane (another of my favs), a tender filet cooked with brandy.

You can’t go wrong, tho; Every bite at Brennan’s in New Orleans is made to impress.


Is Brennan’s Worth It? My Review

In short, yes. Brennan’s in New Orleans is absolutely worth it. 

The food is beyond amazing. I’ve been for brunch and dinner, and from the moment I walked through those pink doors, I just kinda loved the place.

When I walked into Brennan’s, I felt the kind of warmth that only a city rich in history and secrets can give: a hush of tradition, a note of jazz, and the promise of a meal that’s a celebration of culture.

The restaurant’s stately 1795-era mansion on Royal Street envelopes you in old-world elegance, high ceilings, polished wood, and happy vibes.

The highlight for me, of course, was Bananas Foster, which they flambéed right at the table, while I asked 10,000 questions. 

Invented here in 1951 by Chef Paul Blangé, it’s always flambéed tableside, a performance as much as a treat. I watched the flame whip, the bananas caramelize, the thick sauce mingle with vanilla ice cream, my mouth rattling off with questions.

Service was swift and practiced, like a fine orchestra.

I’ve had amazing food all over the world, but Brennan’s is definitely at the top of my list.


Brennan’s Lunch Menu

Brennan’s in New Orleans has a refined yet not overwhelming lunch menu that blends classic Creole flavors with seasonal ingredients. 

You’ll find starters like Gulf shrimp remoulade or crisp salads with house-made dressings. 

Main courses usually star seafood, steak, and poultry dishes with signature sauces, along with sides like creamy grits or roasted vegetables.

Brunch is a big deal here, famous for dishes like Eggs Hussarde and Eggs St. Charles, both rich, flavorful takes on traditional breakfast favorites.

Brennan’s Dinner Menu

Dinner at Brennan’s in New Orleans is an event. 

The menu leans indulgent, with options like Gulf fish with crabmeat, steaks, and classic Creole entrées like Shrimp and Grits.

Appetizers such as Oysters Rockefeller set the tone for a meal that’s equal parts luxury and Louisiana soul.

Dessert is a must, and while Bananas Foster is the showstopper, the bread pudding and seasonal fruit tarts are equally worth the sugar splurge. 

Overall, eating at Brennan’s in the evening feels timeless, like being part of a tradition that’s been passed down through generations (because it has).

You’ll also find NOLA staples like the Sazerac and Ramos Gin Fizz, both deeply tied to the city’s cocktail history.

This creamy classic has been around since the 1600s, but Brennan’s in New Orleans turned it into a brunch legend. 

Served year-round, it’s smooth, rich, and just boozy enough to feel indulgent without being heavy. 

Brennan’s version uses brandy, whole milk, powdered sugar, and a sprinkle of nutmeg, shaken until frothy and perfectly chilled. 

Bubbles at Brennan’s

Bubbles at Brennan’s is a weekday happy hour that celebrates champagne and sparkling cocktails. 

It’s usually in the afternoon (currently at 5 PM but changes throughout the year), has discounted bubbles, small bites, and is a relaxed way to enjoy the French Quarter vibe. 

Award-Winning Wine Collection

Brennan’s has one of the most impressive wine collections in the city, with nearly 1,400 selections designed to pair perfectly with its rich Creole dishes. 

The two-story cellar holds about 15,000 bottles, and the entire second floor is dedicated to Burgundian wines. 

Called the Champagne House of the South, Brennan’s also has nearly 100 different Champagnes and sparkling wines ready to pop.

What is the Dress Code for Brennan’s in New Orleans?

The restaurant suggests collared shirts for men and requests that guests avoid athletic wear, ripped jeans, or flip-flops.

Jackets aren’t required but common.

What to Wear to Brennan’s (Women)

Figuring out what to wear in New Orleans is half the fun. The vibe is chic but not stuffy, so you can dress up a little without going all out. I suggest:

Spring: A flowy floral dress or a cropped blazer with wide-leg trousers feels trendy and fresh. Pair it with block heels or loafers.

Summer: Keep it cool with a linen mini dress, a two-piece set, or a silky camisole with tailored shorts. Wedges or strappy sandals keep it cute without trying too hard. Maxi dress always.

Fall: Think sleek and cozy. Try a slip dress with an oversized blazer or high-waisted jeans with a satin top. Use ankle boots and layered jewelry to pull the whole look together.

Common Questions About Brennan’s

Where is the parking near Brennan’s?

There’s a paid parking garage right across the street on Royal and Iberville, and a few other lots within a short walk.

If you’re staying nearby, walking or grabbing a quick rideshare is the most stress-free option.

Can you only order Bananas Foster at dinner?

Thankfully, no! 

Bananas Foster was actually invented at Brennan’s, and it’s served all day long. You can order it at breakfast, lunch, or dinner, no reason needed.

Are reservations required at Brennan’s?

You don’t technically need a reservation, but it’s definitely recommended. 

Brennan’s opens reservations 60 days in advance, and tables fill up fast, especially for brunch and weekends. 

If you have a big group of six or more, call the restaurant directly and they’ll help you get set up.

Is Brennan’s open on major holidays?

Brennan’s is open for most holidays and creates special menus for the occasion.

The only days they close are Mardi Gras Day and Christmas Day.
