San Francisco, California, has some of the best weather on the West Coast, and it comes as no surprise! SF is one of the most magical, spectacular, underrated places in the entire world no, I am not biased

Speaking of style, the weather, geography, and fun contribute to the overall vibe. Layers are the key to dressing for success in SF, as even the warmest day can have a chilly moment, and a light sweat under the winter sun isn’t unheard of, either.

This is what to wear for San Francisco’s weather by the month-

5 SF Essentials You Need for Every Season

How to style San Francisco for every month, how to use layers to combat San Francisco's weather.

SF’s vibe is casual, unassuming, and laid-back. Luxury brands and showy outfits aren’t the norm here. Clubwear isn’t much of a thing either, as this city sleeps early. However, there are a few staple pieces you’ll need all year in SF.

Here are a few things you’ll want to pack for any weather in San Francisco:

  • #1 Jacket. There’s nearly always a cool breeze blowing through, so pack a light jacket or thin cardigan no matter when you visit.
  • #2 Shades. Most days in SD are sunny year-round, so don’t skip the sunglasses and wide-brimmed hats.
  • #3 Leggings and Jeans. San Francisco is a casual city- think jeans or leggings, comfy clothing, sandals, flip-flops, and minimalist jewelry.
  • #4 Comfy Shoes. You’ll want to walk all over this lovely city, so you’ll need some comfy shoes
  • #5 Sun Protection. SF can get sunny (remember you’re near the ocean!), so even if you don’t plan to go to the beach, protect your face with ‘screen. I LOVE this sunscreen by Round Lab because it also moisturizes and gives me a dewy look in the sun without making my skin oily. I’ve previously used Supergoop exclusively because they’re the only brand I’ve found that doesn’t break out my combo skin, but it didn’t give me quite the glow or hydration.

San Francisco Weather in the Spring

What to wear in San Francisco for the spring.

Spring in San Francisco is straight-up breathtaking! The spring months are also the city’s rainest, calling for coats, boots, and anti-frizz (I swear by Olaplex‘s leave in conditioner).

  • March: In March, the weather begins to transition from chilly winter days to warmer spring afternoons. With about 4 inches of rain during the month, it’s smart to keep an umbrella handy. Daylight is on the rise, giving us more time to enjoy the outdoors. I love seeing blooming flowers and trees start to bud.
  • April: April welcomes more warmth and sunshine, making it one of my favorite months.
  • More clear days mean more outdoor activities, such as Golden Gate going and other outdoor activities.
  • May: By May, you can really feel summer knocking on SF’s front door. The days get longer, so make time for beaches and trails, enjoying the mild weather before the summer heat sets in.

What to Wear

Think increasingly warmer days and always chilly nights! Spring in San Francisco requires layers. Here’s what to wear-

  • Flowy dresses and maxi skirts for sunny but chilly days
  • Comfy leggings for hiking and sunsets at the beach
  • Blazers dress up anything; bring a light one for evening dinners or fashionable street posing.

San Francisco Weather in the Summer

San Francisco weather in the summer finally allows for shorter skirts and dresses but layers are still a must.

Warm and sometimes hot, summer in San Francisco is the dry season, and rain is rare. The summer is perfect for leisurely days spent exploring SF’s lovely little neighborhoods and Victorian houses.

  • June: San Francisco kicks off with a thick layer of fog most Junes. IMO, this adds a unique ambiance, making SF feel fogtastically magical. The mornings are also chilly, but the sun warms things up a bit before the fog clears up in the afternoon. Stay layered so you can adjust.
  • July: By July, the California dreamin’ vibes really kick in. The fog still checks in occasionally, but it tends to be less frequent. So, you can expect plenty of sunshine. Just be prepared for cool breezes, especially in the evening. Bring a light jacket for cooler nights.
  • August: August keeps the summer spirit alive in San Francisco. Expect some fog, but generally just a mix of sun and clouds. August has slightly less fog than July, which means more sunny days to enjoy. The beaches can still be crowded, but it’s always chill in SF.

What to Wear

Remember a soft hoodie or sweater to keep you snuggly warm after the sun goes down. Here’s what I suggest:

  • Linen is breathable and ideal for the summer. These linen pants are perfect for the beach and can easily be dressed up or casual’d out.
  • Shorts and skater skirts. SF always has chilly moments, so wear cute knee-highs if you get cold easily.
  • Crop tops, structured maxi skirts, and a pleather jacket for dinner time.

San Francisco Weather in the Fall

What to wear for the weather in San Francisco in the fall.

Fall in San Francisco brings comfy temperatures and a mix of sunshine and fog. It’s a time when the city transforms, and seasonally spiced food and drink specials are everywhere.

Don’t expect the typical, leaf-dappled, chilly weather vibes of other Pacific cities like Portland, but instead, a uniquely SF fall with temps in the 50s during the day and 60s-70s at night.

  • September: Supposedly the warmest month in San Francisco, daytime temperatures hit the mid-70s. I love how it feels warm enough to walk around without a jacket on a sunny day. SF’s famous fog starts to thin out, too.
  • October: Things get real in October. I’ve noticed it can feel crisp, especially in the mornings. The fog appears but usually clears up by noon. I often see more clouds, but there are plenty of sunny days too. As always, layers are key in San Francisco.
  • November: By November, the temperature drops even more, with highs averaging in the upper 60s °F. I often find myself needing a heavier coat as winter approaches. Nights can get cold. Rain becomes more common, so stay strapped with an umbrella.

What to Wear

With highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s, you’ll need to layer. Start with these-

  • Comfy sweaters for optimal happiness.
  • Jeans, leggings, or maxi skirts. Add sheer stockings under skirts for chilly evenings.
  • Fall is the rainy season, so waterproof coats are a must. This Columbia jacket is my go-to.
  • Throw in a nice blazer to dress up any outfit, day or night. Bonus points if it’s wool.

San Francisco Weather in the Winter

What to wear for San Francisco in the cold winter months.

Don’t expect snow in San Francisco, but a modest, West Coast winter with decent weather. Winter in San Francisco is mild compared to other places.

While you may see some rain, the temperatures are pretty mild. Winter is the ideal time to go to San Francisco if saving $$$ costs and avoiding big groups of people are the most important to you.

  • December: The 12th month sets the stage for winter in San Francisco. Rain begins to pick up also.
  • January: I find January to be one of the coolest months, with average high temps in the late 60s, similar to December, but with lows in the 40s.
  • February: February is when I start to feel the shift towards spring. The average highs are in the 60s and lows in the 40s. Layers are key during these cooler, damp days.
