Clothing strategy

There is a fine line between overpacking and not being prepared. Use these tips to walk the line:

  • Pack what you really need. Are you 100% sure you’ll need those 3 extra bathing suits in Seattle? What about that snazzy pair of pants that literally only matches one top? To avoid these headaches, dress and pack simple, seasonally appropriate clothing that can be used for multiple activities.
  • Layer up! Pack lightweight clothing that can be layered for different climates and weather conditions.
  • Choose quick-drying materials like polyester or merino wool to help you wash and dry clothes more efficiently.
  • Opt for versatile footwear that can be used in multiple situations, such as sneakers or comfortable walking shoes.

How to build basic outfits that work for any trip

Travel blogger Courtney Lux demonstrates giving examples and tips on packing for a budget flight.

If you want a bunch of different looks, focus on pieces that fit together in multiple ways.

  • Jeans: Dress them up, dress them down, pair them with everything.
  • Maxi Dresses: They’re comfortable, they can be dressed up with accessories or down with sneakers, and everyone can wear them. Short girls, you have NO excuse- I’m 4’11,’ and I kill Maxis.
  • Comfy Shoes: Even if you won’t be hiking, but you know you’ll be spending time standing or shopping, you’ll want something more than those shoes that make your butt look great.
  • Activewear: Bring at least one active outfit if you plan to do anything adventurous. Leggings are perfect for hiking or walking. I love these leggings because they have pockets and are very breathable.

Toiletry and accessory packing tips

To save space, time, and money, I follow a few simple hacks for packing toiletries:

  1. Use travel-sized containers to store your shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. As a bonus, containers designed for travel will also help you comply with liquid regulations.
  2. Save on travel-sized fragrances. Buy a perfume atomizer and take your favorite scent with you.
  3. Keep jewelry safe. Use a travel jewelry case to keep your earrings together and necklaces tangle-free.
  4. Fill your DIY pocket pharmacy. I love this medicine organizer because it comes with labels.
  5. Keep it comfy. This cozy two-in-one airplane blanket and pillow saves space and helps you relax through your flight.

Remember, keeping your toiletry packing list minimal and helps you avoid any potential spills or messes in your luggage.

Luggage Tips and Tricks

Carry-On size matters

It would make sense for all budget airlines to use one universal size for carry-ons. The truth is, when it comes to airlines, one size definitely does not fit all.

We’ve all witnessed or experienced the tragic, dramatic scene of a passenger being denied entry to their flight due to having the wrong bag size. Always check the required dimensions and weight of carry-ons and personal items before you even start formulating outfits in your head.

I have a “Spirit bag” for my Spirit flights, and since requirements don’t change often, I don’t need to constantly check the site.

Maximizing your clothing space: 5 practical tips

A line of well folded clothes waits to be added to a suitcase.

To make the most out of my limited luggage space, I apply these efficient packing methods:

  1. If you’re light on space but have the time roll your clothes. Rolling my clothes tightly helps me save space and prevents wrinkles.
  2. Utilize empty spaces. For example, I pack socks and small items inside my shoes.
  3. Pack multi-purpose items. A well-fitted, neutral tee can be dressed up or down.
  4. Stuff smaller items, like underwear or socks, inside of shoes. Use shoe bags to keep them from getting your clothes gross.
  5. Plan for the plane. Wear your bulkiest shoes and jacket on the plane to create more space in your bag.
  6. Put heavier items in your handbag. Most airlines will allow you to carry a small, zip-able handbag in addition to your carry-on. These usually aren’t weighed as they are considered a personal item. Note: Not all airlines allow this. Always double-check with your specific carrier.

Use my practical tips on packing for a budget trip to save you space in your suitcase and drama at the airport.

Weigh your luggage before the airport

This is one of my secret weapon tips on packing for a budget: Weigh your luggage before it gets to the airport to avoid a nasty surprise when the attendant says your bag is too hefty.

This happened to me once on the way to Cabo, and I nearly missed my flight in the time it took me to call my friend, who had dropped me at the airport to come pick up half of my unpacked clothes.

Avoid this by purchasing an inexpensive scale from Amazon that allows you to weigh your luggage before you ever leave home.

Extra Tips on Packing for Budget Airlines

Time for the cherry on top. These are 5 final tips on how to pack for a budget flight:

  1. Bring a multi-use power bank. No one wants their phone to die during a trip! But what about your headphones or our camera? I always pack my handy Baseus power bank, which has ports for literally everything.
  2. Fill a collapsible water bottle. Staying hydrated is important, and I always carry a BPA-free, collapsible water bottle that takes up minimal space when empty.
  3. Check your texts. Sign up for those annoying flight update texts. I’ll admit, this is one of those tips on packing for a budget that I ignored for years because I despise spam. However, the updates can be useful. Most budget airlines try to remind you of the extra fees they charge and how to avoid paying them, plus send updates about flight delays. You can always unsubscribe later.
  4. Sharing is caring. Traveling with a friend or family member? On most budget airlines, one checked bag costs less than two carry-ons. If you’ll be together for the whole trip, share a larger checked bag with your traveling companion.
  5. Save space for souvenirs. What goes up must come down, and what you buy on your trip must fit in your suitcase on the way back home. Buy small souvenirs like jewelry, magnets, keychains, coins, or canvas bags. Note: If you find something you must have (no shame!) but know it’ll take up space, see if shipping the items home is less expensive.

My final tips on packing for budget flights leave no stone unturned or suitcase space unused!

Frequently asked questions

How do you pack for a low-cost flight?

When packing for a low-cost flight, I always start by checking the airline’s baggage policy to make sure I follow their rules, knowing that they will be waiting to catch me slippin’.

Next, I make a list of necessities and limit non-essentials. I then choose a lightweight suitcase or backpack to save on weight, space, and, ultimately, money. Versatile, multi-use clothing is my go-to, and I avoid bulky items or wear them on the plane. Read my tips on packing for a budget airline above for more details.

Is it better to roll clothes for budget packing?

Personally, I find rolling clothes is a fantastic technique for budget packing. Rolling my clothes also helps to save space, allowing me to fit more items into a smaller bag.

How do I pack for a 4-day trip on a budget?

If I know I’m packing for a 4-day trip on a budget flight, I focus on the essentials, like a few tops, pants, socks, and underwear.

One -two pairs of versatile shoes, the heavier of which I will board the plane with. A small toiletries bag (AKA personal item) with travel-sized items, chargers, headphones, and important documents.

How do I pack for a 5-day trip on a budget?

For a 5-day budget trip, I pack similar to a 4-day trip: essential clothing, personal items, and toiletries. I aim to wash and re-wear some clothes, so I don’t need to bring as many items. In that case, I will bring along a laundry bag to keep the nasty clothes separated from the clean.

How do you pack lightly for a 7-day trip?

For a 7-day trip, I still prioritize basic toiletries, clothing, etc. Packing versatile outfits that can be mixed and matched is useful. One or two extra shirts and pants help with variety. Layering is key; I choose lightweight and packable-layered clothing to save space.

Is a carry-on enough for 7 days?

Yes, a carry-on can be enough for a 7-day trip if you pack strategically. Focus on versatile clothing, well-packed toiletries, and minimal footwear.

Mulit-use items and creative tetris-ing techniques, like rolling clothes, will help maximize your carry-on space for 7 days.

What is the golden rule of budget packing?

The golden rule I follow for budget packing is to pack light and only bring necessities.

This allows me to avoid paying additional baggage fees and makes traveling easier. While packing, I remind myself that less is more… literally. Less clothing packed means more money saved for more exciting things like more trips. And that is the golden rule of budget packing.
