If you’ve got an upcoming beach vacation and have been wondering what to pack for it… wonder no more!

I’ve traveled to beaches all over the world and have found that packing for all beaches is basically the same. Aiming for a mix of versatile pieces, some bright and some neutral in breathable fabrics, and lots of bathing suits and some vital tech like a portable charger, are universal needs for any beach.

Here’s What to Pack for a Beach Vacation

Essentials

Travel writer Courtney Lux's reccomendations for what to pack for a beach vacation.

Sunscreen. I don’t ever leave home without sunscreen! Look for one that is reef-safe, meaning it won’t degrade or destroy the natural reefs. You also want your sunscreen oil-free, meaning it won’t clog your pores since you’ll definitely be sweating at the beach. SuperGoop is both.

Lip Balm with SPF. Because lips get chapped and burned also!

Underarm Deodorant Wipes. Great for laying out after swimming without bringing a deodorant bar that could melt in the scorching sun.

Portable, Microfiber Towel. I love microfiber towels because they absorb water quickly and don’t stay wet forever like a traditional towel.

Sunglasses. Pack more than one pair! I get all of my signature heart-shaped glasses from Amazon.

Sun Hat. Any good beach vacation will get hot, and you’ll need to pack a hat. Wide-brimmed hats are both fashionable and functional- this straw hat with a bow is super cute AND has SPF 50 (plus it fits my tiny head).

Reusable Water Bottle. Beaches don’t always sell snacks or water or allow glass or plastic. I love my reusable water bottle because it’s BPA-free (so the hot sun won’t break down the material) and rolls up to fit into my pocket when empty. Also, consider Hydration Packets to keep the electrolytes flowing.

Waterproof Phone Case. If you’ve ever lost your phone to the ocean (I feel for you so hard!), you know how important it is to have a waterproof, floating case.

Dry Bags. These are especially useful if you take a boat tour that requires swimming a bit to get to the beach. This has happened to me in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, and I wouldn’t have been able to take my phone off the boat without it!

Tote Bag. You need a way to bring towels and other beach essentials with you. This tote has a detachable insulated cooler for drinks and snacks.

Snacks. I don’t know about you, but the water makes me hungry fast.

Beach Tech

Portable Charger. For keeping your phone, camera, and other beach gear charged.

Underwater Camera. Underwater Cameras are lifesavers because you don’t have to risk your phone around the water. I love Akaso’s wireless control, so I can take photos with the camera strapped safely to my wrist.

Tripod. For taking amazing photos of the ocean, groups, and other badass travel photos with just your phone.

Swim

High-Waisted Bikinis. I am obsessed with high-waisted bikinis! They are less reserved than a one-piece but have more coverage than the classic bikini.

One-Piece Swimsuit. One-pieces are easy to layer with shorts, pants, or skirts and are perfect for a day of adventures or walking around. Throwing on a wide-brimmed hat on top of a belted one-piece is always a quick way to look chic and put together at the beach.

Colorful Swimsuits. For contrasting the colors of the ocean. Great for photos.

Cover-Ups. Bathing suit cover-ups are perfect for transitioning from town to the beach. They’re also great for running to your car or equipment rental stands with a little extra coverage.

Outfits

Crop Tops. Wear them with shorts, jeans, leggings, or high-waisted maxi skirts. Versatile, comfy, and perfect for hanging around resorts or beach towns.

Flowy Pants. Match loose-fitting fabric pants with a crop top or bikini top, whether you’re lounging by the pool or going out for brunch.

Maxi Skirts. Combine with a crop top or bikini top for an easy, put-together outfit. Layer on accessories for a more boho vibe.

Shorts. Denim, cotton, or linen, just pack a few comfortable and versatile pairs.

Sun Dresses. Perfect for throwing over bathing suits or as stand-alone outfits.

Long Dresses. I love long, warm-colored flow dresses to contrast the blues of the ocean.

Shoes

Water Shoes. Some beaches have rocky areas, and sometimes, the sand can get hot. Protect your feet. I like these because they smash together in my suitcase nicely when you have limited suitcase space.

Sandals. A casual pair of sandals in a neutral color like tan or black works for everything.

Sneakers. Most beach destinations will have a jungle or exciting place to hike, so pack comfy shoes.

What to Pack for a Day Lounging at the Beach

Portable Beach Umbrella. You can pair any umbrella with a Beach Umbrella Tray to hold onto your drinks, sunglasses, and phones.

Microfiber Beach Towel. I love microfiber towels because they dry faster and absorb more than a regular towel.

Sand Costers. So your drink doesn’t topple over into the sand- genius!

Beach Clips. These keep your towel and clothes from blowing away! Beach clips are one of my favorite inexpensive travel hacks.

Waterproof Speaker. Nothing completes a relaxing day at the beach like music.

What to Pack for an Adventurous Day at the Beach

Bug Spray. Always use an environmentally friendly bug spray.

Snorkel Gear. Some beaches have affordable and available equipment rentals, and some don’t.

Inflatable Stand Up Paddle Board. I love the ROC paddleboard because it comes with literally everything you need- a board, collapsible aluminum paddle, removable fin, coil safety leash, and hand pump for inflation.
